INFLUENCE OF TEACHERS’ CHARACTERISTICS ON STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN BIOLOGY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN NSIT IBOM LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
The effectiveness of every educational system depends on the competence and quality of its teachers. Teachers’ attitude contributes towards the academic performance of the students. To become a teacher, one has to undergo teacher training programme to acquire skills. A professional teacher must possess certain characteristics to blend with the demands of teaching profession. That is, a teacher must possess a unique pattern of behavior in congruent with the ethics of the profession (Okoro 2005).
Government realizes the importance of this vital sector and makes provision in the National Policy on Education (2004) which states that qualified teachers should be employed to teach in schools. Also seminars and workshops should be made available for teachers to update their knowledge and techniques in the educational system for effective education of the citizens.
Unachukwu (2005) states that a teacher in professional usage is a person trained or recognized and employed to help in learning in classroom situation in order to achieve the set educational goals. Teaching and learning takes place in the classroom where the teacher with his wealth of knowledge and trained resources for meaningful teaching and learning. The classroom teacher takes the major responsibility for the promotion of the child’s learning. Learning is child centered. It therefore shows that positive teachers’ attitude will foster the child’s learning positively whereas negative teachers’ attitude affects the child negatively.
The right combination of personality traits, attitude and background characteristics of the teacher will enable the teacher to provide the right kind of learning experience for students’ learning outcomes. Education is geared to good teachers’ attitude as a channel to effective learning and modification of knowledge (Brown and Jones, 2006).
Gallagher (2001) enumerated both the human qualities and academic characteristics that can foster learning to include physical energy, perseverance, responsibility, initiative, self control, humor, loyalty, leadership, dignity, punctuality, friendly, humorous, motivator, knowledgeable, orderly, updated, qualified, creative and authority. Teachers’ attitude are significant for students’ academic performance.
