EFFECT OF PARENTAL INFLUENCE ON STUDENTS CHOICE OF CAREER
Tuckman (1992:288-289) observed that “the purpose of the literature review is to expand upon the context and background of the study to help further define the problem, and to provide an empirical basis subsequent development of hypothesis”. For Obasi (1999:102), “through a review, one can improve on one’s methodology or adopt the most appropriate one already used in previous studies”. Still on this, Odighoh and Osuagwu (1998:41) state most importantly that a literature review enables a “writer” to obtain state-of-the act knowledge about development in a given subject matter.
Accordingly this chapter reveals
existing literatures that are related to the variables and subject here under
study. The family normally provides a
child with his first social experiences, this provides the models with which
the child can be identify. They can
consciously set themselves up as advisers or they may be approached by the
child for direct advice on a wide range of matters including vocation. Within the family the parents provides
enormous influence on children on the choice of career, this especially took
place in established professionally homes like that of the Accountants,
Lawyers, Doctors etc, it is an established fact today that at least a member of
the family must be train to take over their chamber, clinic etc. In all societies, whether developed, developing
or underdeveloped, the quality of workers as well as their degree of
satisfaction goes a long way to determine the smooth functioning and the
economic stability of the society. In
practical terms, there is no single situation in life, which is potentially so
capable of giving same satisfaction of one’s basic needs as his
occupation. Occupation is a way of
life. It molds one’s character,
determines his/her social status and in most cases, conditions his life style
generally.
In view of the importance of
occupation in human society, career education for the children should receive
proper attention in the best interest of the society. Through family influences, everyone is
exposed to values relationships, attitudes, feelings and certain climate for
learning, the family undoubtedly has profound influence upon every aspect of
the child development, his/her desires, satisfactions, dissatisfactions and
work roles are also learned in the home. Individuals have different motives
about some career available in their environment; school leavers cannot make
adequate career choice unless they are aware of the range of occupations open
to them with their qualifications and facilities available for such occupation. Numerous studies have presented family
variables and student’s choice of career.
