PROTEST BY PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS AGAINST SACK OF 21,780 TEACHERS
The
pupils who were seen carrying leaves were shouting 'Ba muso' which
means 'they don’t want the planned sacking of their teachers'.
The
state government recently announced the dismissal of the teachers who
purportedly failed the primary four exams conducted for primary school teachers
and also announce the recruitment of 25,000 teachers to replace them This
decision has been causing rancour in the state as the Nigerian Union of Teachers
kicked against the move.
Supporting
their teachers, pupils from
Sabon Gari and Zaria local government areas have reportedly
trooped out to register their displeasure with the government decision about
their teachers.
The
pupils who were seen carrying leaves were shouting ''Ba muso'' which
means 'they don’t want the planned sacking of their teachers'.
Some
of the pupils according to reports said they don't want their teachers to be
sacked.
The
pupils also threatened they would not return to school until their teachers are
reinstated.
Meanwhile,
the state governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has condemned the pupil's involvement
in the row between government and teachers.
Speaking
through his spokesperson, Samuel Aruwan, El-Rufai said the government will not
tolerate endangerment of minors by adults who are sending them to the streets.
"It
is a callous and despicable act to involve young pupils in illegal,
politically-inspired demonstration. The Kaduna State Government has received
reports of primary school pupils being pushed to the streets by their
unqualified teachers for illegal protests. These unlawful acts have included
getting young children to block highways.
“Government condemns this wanton disregard for the lives
and safety of primary school pupils placed in the care of these unqualified
teachers. It is grievous enough that bad teachers have been allowed to imperil
the educational future of these children. But for these same teachers to
endanger the children by asking them to block and lie on highways illustrates a
chilling level of irresponsibility that no law-governed society can accept.” The Governor said.
