Teachers Questioning Strategies


INTRODUCTION
  
A question is any sentence which has an interrogative form or function. In classroom settings, teacher’s question is instructional cues or stimuli that convey to students the content elements to be learned and directions for what they are to do and how they are to do it. 

Teachers ask question from the start of the lesson until the end. Asking question form part of any lesson because it invites the students to think, rhetorical questions are used to invite silent agreement or being the organization of ideas to present a response.

Teachers use questions to engaged the students and sustain a active style to learning. The teacher also uses question as part of the assessment of learning in order to determine how the best structure, organize and present new learning.

Question during teaching is an old strategy also known as “Socratic method of teaching”. It was developed by the famous philosopher Socrates. According to Parke 1989, “the question is the key to all educative activity above the habit-skill level. It strategy is focused on to achieve the cognitive objectives and bringing knowledge to the conscious level.
